The Monkey (2025) Review

It is an American black comedy horror movie directed by Osgood Perkins and is based on Stephen King 1980 short story of the same name.

Plot:

When the twin brothers find a monkey in the attic, they discover something sinister about it.

I do think the movie is fun, but there's something about it that is missing. The story itself is ridiculous with a toy monkey that kills people in the same style as Final Destination. It's a good idea to make it a comedy with its premise and is executed decent. I do think it build up pretty well with the characters slowly realizing that the monkey is evil and no matter what, they can't get rid of it. The movie is similar to Final Destination with a supernatural entity that is causing these people deaths, and those are pretty effective, but some of it lacks any tension to it. As for the comedy of the movie, most of it comes from the death scenes on how overtop they are and might have some laugh to it. But most of the humor is pretty weak throughout. The movie also tries to do some drama with it but poorly executed on how it handles it.

The characters themselves do have good intentions, but they aren't executed that well.

Hal is the main character who is first tormented by his brother on how he treats him and in fear of the monkey return. He's does have a good concept with him, but he is mostly either trying to protect his son and seeing nightmares of the monkey. Theo James plays both brothers in the movie, and he does a pretty good job with his performance in the movie.

Bill is his asshole brother who mostly treats him like crap but becomes obsessed with the monkey. I do like the idea of his obsession with the monkey and keeping it for himself. But he barely appears that much in the middle of the movie. Also, their relationship isn't that interesting because they have an obvious arc to them and aren't executed well.

Petey is Hal son who acts like any teenager boy. You see any movies out there and mostly question his father sanity.

As I mentioned before, the deaths are extremely overtop and are the highlight of the movie. The Monkey kills 30 people in the entire movie, which shows how dangerous it is. Each of these deaths are pretty creative on how they did it and is really graphic when you see it. The special effects look pretty good in current kills in the movie and how two of them explosion in a bloody mess.

The Monkey is a fun movie that does a decent job with its execution, but it does contain flaws in it.
