Hello!

As many others have before me, I wanted to take on the challenge of creating a fakemon region, which is where and why the Axuya region comes in!

The name Axuya is derived from ‘Jayuya,’ a city based in Puerto Rico, and vaguely on the word ‘complex.’ My main intention, and the theme for the region, is wanting to explore the nuances of people and how they interact with themselves and with one another.

I’ve tried my hand at deg fakemon pretty sparsely, but I hope to do so under a cohesive restriction such as a region. I think it’s an incredibly fun prospect as well as a means to improve the way I approach character design, both in Pokémon and in other characters connected to them, such as a Gym Leaders.

That aside, I also want to take the opportunity to learn about parts of a culture I never really got to explore. I’m Puerto Rican on my mother’s side but I grew up in such a way that I wasn’t exposed to much of it, so I hope this comes as a learning experience for me in pertinence to lineage as much as it does my art.

All that said, I’d like to introduce you to the resident region professor, Professor Mangrove!

In line with the trend of naming Pokémon professors after plants and trees, I chose the mangrove tree! Theres a super large amount of mangrove forests that are so so vital to Puerto Rico’s ecosystem, and they’re very beautiful!

I envision her as someone you’d see across the region doing a whole bunch of different things. Biking, surfing, battling, performing. Anything and everything you can think of, she wants to do it all.

She keeps her partner Pokémon in the chain of her glasses. I may add a mega stone sometime later.

I used a lot of round shapes with her design in mind, I wanted her to come off as bubbly and friendly, but she’s also very much not afraid to tell it how it is, with a smile on her face and all. It’s always well-intentioned.

As I further the develop the region, expect her reference to change from time to time, especially as I consider her team with the creation of Pokémon!

Most (human) character’s reference sheets will be structured in a similar way as well.

Additions to the region won’t be super frequent as I do have other responsibilities but I hope to commit to this enough to get something out semi-regularly.

Once I create enough content, I’ll be cross-posting to Tiktok as well!

I intend for my next post to be about the starters, I have a really fun concept in mind for them.
